LAWRENCE — When he was growing up in a housing project on the Lower East Side of Manhattan, other youths teased and ridiculed Richard Rodriguez because of his speech and hearing difficulties.
He was in special education classes, which in those days were segregated from t
he rest of the school, and he was told that he could not be educated.
He was often pressured to join this or that gang and harassed when he refused those demands.
Today, however, Rodriguez, 52, is a lawyer. He practices in Lawrence and his specialties include custody, child support, divorce and guardianship as well as nonprofit organizations.
Rodriguez was selected to be the alumni speaker for the awards ceremony at John Jay College of Criminal Justice in New York City on May 7.
